Jio Telecommunication’s giant, Mukesh Ambani, is set to revolutionise the digital payment landscape as it ventures into the UPI payment segment, presenting tough competition for industry leaders such as Paytm, PhonePe, and Google Pay.
Jio recently announced Jio Soundbox, a device that replicates the well-liked Paytm Soundbox seen in retail stores and is integrated into the company’s current Jio Pay App. Jio Soundbox is now in trial mode, and a retail launch is scheduled for soon.
Jio aims to attract retailers with appealing offers to boost adoption and appeal while strategically outperforming rivals. Coinciding with recent losses suffered by competitors, such as the suspension of Paytm Payment Bank (although Paytm’s UPI services remain unaffected), this surprise action comes at a critical moment.
Akash Ambani, chairman of Reliance Jio, made a groundbreaking revelation during the 46th annual general meeting, stating that the JioBharat phones will now support UPI payments. Describing the JioBharat phone as a “gateway to digital independence for those who cannot afford smartphones,” Ambani emphasised the revolutionising of financial access, making transactions smooth and easy. This announcement signals Jio’s dedication to inclusivity, ensuring that even the most disadvantaged can go cashless.
